Dr. Durlav Chandra Dutta, popularly known as D C D was one of the most respected and beloved <br/>Teacher and Gynaecologist in the country.
He was born in Konwarpur Village in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal. He was the 8th issue of his parents Sri Nitai Chandra Dutta and Srimati Dutta. After completion of his school education he started his medical education at Medical College, Calcutta. He completed his MBBS course in the year 1954. Later on he obtained his Master Degree M.O. in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from University of Calcutta. He started his Medical Profession as a Demonstrator in the Department of Anatomy in Medical College, Calcutta. Later on he joined the post of the Resident Surgeon (RS) in Eden Hospital. This post was known as ‘Prince of Eden’.
After completion o his tenure of RS, he moved to different district Hospitals of Bengal as a Gynaecologist. He worked in the District of Jalpaiguri, Suri and Chinsurah respectively. He joined the teaching post at NILRATAN SIRCAR MEDICAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL as a Lecturer in the year 1974. Within a few years he became the Professor and Head of the Department, Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the same Institution. His personality, ability, sports man spirit and pleasant companion made in very popular to his students, colleague and his patients He was well known for his fast surgical skill. He was the author of four important Text Books in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. These are :
- Text Book of Obstetrics
- Text Book of Gynaecology
- Emergencies in Manipulative and Operative Obstetrics
- A Guide to Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
All these books are widely read at home and abroad. His last work “Gynaecology for Postgraduate and Practitioners” has come out with its next edition. His entire works have been dedicated to all his beloved students past and present. He taught thousand to work in this discipline of Medicine for the improvement of the women’s health in Rural India. His Association with Bengal Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society and The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecologic Societies of India was deep throughout his life. He breathed his last on 29th December 1995 at the age of 63 years.
